Captain Joseph T. Hock, USN
Captain Joseph T. Hock was born in New York City 01 December 1936. He enlisted in the
Naval Reserve in August 1954. Following his acceptance as a Reserve Officer Candidate, he
graduated from St. John's University and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1959.
Captain Hock's first duty assignment was to USS STEINAKER (DDR-863), where, prior to
reassignment in 1962, he was fleeted up to head the Weapons Department. His next tour
of duty was as Weapons instructor at the University of Rochester NROTC Unit, where he augmented
into the regular Navy and received an M.A. in history. He then joined the precommissioning
crew of the Pacific Fleet escort USS BRADLEY (DE-1041) as Weapons Officer. He returned
to the east coast as Officer-in-Charge of USS A.T. HARRIS (DE-447), an NRF escort.
In September 1968 Captain Hock reported to the School of International Service, American
University. After completing a year of study, he received orders to the Republic of Vietnam
as Commander "Operation Searchturn." In the fall of 1970 he reported as Prospective
Executive Officer of USS MANLEY (DD-940). which was receiving its ASW modernization, and
remained in the billet through commissioning and the ship's first operational deployment.
After a tour on Commander in Chief. U.S. Atlantic Fleet's Staff, Captain Hock assumed
commander of USS TRUETT (FF-1095). Upon relief, he joined the staff of Supreme Allied
Commander, Atlantic. The last year of that tour was spent on temporary duty as part of
the initial staffing of the Tactical Training Group, Atlantic. He was next ordered to
OPNAV as Head of the Surface Warfare Plans, Combatant Requirements and Readiness Branch of the
Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OF-321) and then to Assistant Chief of Staff for
Combat Systems at COMNAVSURFLANT. Captain Hock assumed command of USS BIDDLE 20 June 1984.
Captain Hock is married to the former Marilyn Achtliger of New York City. The
Hocks have three daughters, Marie. Beth and, Liesl.
