Robert Daniel (AX1, 1972) was a part of the helo detachment on the 1972 Cruise. AW3 Steve Mayo and he were the helo crewmen who made the first LAMPS combat rescue.

Bob has also sent a couple of pages from the HC-4 squadron newspaper that was printed after the detachment returned to Lakehurst, NJ at the end of the cruise.

The door gunner's view while in flight

AW1 Waugh passing the M-60 machine gun to AX1 Daniel for a day's patrol along the coast.

A view of the helo in the hangar. 23 chains required to tie it down. The hangar was so small, we had to tie chains to each side of the rotor head to keep it from slamming the blades against the sides of the hangar in rough weather.

AX1 Daniel in the door and co-pilot LT Corcoran prior to taking off for the day's flying.

Notice the crewman in the door, since the deck is so small, he has to look aft, and tell the pilot when the tail wheel is aboard.

On later versions of this helo, the wheel was moved forward for small deck operations.

The flightdeck crew attach the tie-down chains and are running clear prior to engine shut-down.
